Frenkie de Jong is heralded as one of the best young midfielders in Europe, and some of the biggest teams in the world have been tracking him with eyes towards making a move for him in the near future.

FC Barcelona were close to sign him this past summer, but ultimately couldn’t complete a deal before the end of the summer transfer window. And now Los Blaugranas might find some competition to acquire the 21-year-old since Tottenham are taking a closer look at the Ajax midfielder.

According to a report from the Express, Tottenham had a scout in attendance on Ajax’s 4.0 win over Vitesse this Sunday in the Eredivisie, in which de Jong started and played 70 minutes. However, the Spurs are not alone on the race to sign the coveted Dutch prospect, since Dortmund and Barca are also keen on his services.

Signing the 21-year-old won’t come for cheap, however, as Ajax rate their young playmaker around the £40m range, and that number could increase if he has a good start to the season for the Amsterdam side. Especially since Ajax will play in the Champions League, and the Dutch giants drawn with AEK Athens, Bayern Munich and Benfica in the group stage.

The one thing that’s clear is that the Spurs want him. And they are not going to give up on him easily.
