Done Deal: Henrikh Mkhitaryan signs for Manchester United

Manchester United’s protracted pursuit of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, 28, is entering the final phase. The Armenian international, for so long denied an exit from Borussia Dortmund, has completed his move to Old Trafford this weekend.

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 34, joining on a free transfer yesterday, Jose Mourinho’s remodelling of the Manchester United attack is complete. The Portuguese manager, in the early days of his reign, has moved decisively in the transfer market to ensure that most of the squad will be available for pre-season training.

The arrival of the Swede will make the media’s job easier. Neither he nor Mourinho has proven shy in the past to provide a worthy quote and it will be interesting to see the egos jostle for prime position.

Mkhitaryan, himself quiet by their standards, brings his enfant terrible agent, Rino Maiola, with him. The Italian reportedly threw a chair against a wall in a meeting with Dortmund’s directors as he became frustrated by their determination to not sell his client to United.

Eventually though, the Germans decided to cash in on their prized asset who is in the last year of his contract. Negotiations were completed swiftly when a delegation arrived in Manchester this week and with the two clubs agreeing their side of the deal, the player’s formalities followed suit.
