Paris St. Germain are set to land a hammer blow to Arsene Wenger continued attempts to strengthen Arsenal’s midfield.
Both clubs are interested in securing the services of Sevilla’s Grzegorz Krychowiak, 26, but the French club are in pole position having made “a big offer” according to the Spanish club’s chairman, Jose Castro Carmona.
Krychowiak was a key member of Poland’s side as the bowed out of Euro 2016 in last night’s quarter-final defeat to Portugal. He has been capped 40 times by his country having made his debut at 18, against Serbia.
Arsene Wenger has long admired Krychowiak’s defensive discipline and having released Mathieu Flamini, 32, Mikel Arteta, 34, and Tomas Rosicky, 35, is keen to bolster his midfield numbers. Granit Xhaka, 23, has arrived from Borussia Monchengladbach but the Gunners boss is on the lookout for one more experienced player to sign.
Signed from Reims in 2014, Krychowiak has a £30m release clause in his contract but so far, no-one has met that valuation. Castro Carmona admitted that the sizeable offer had initiated talks with the French champions: “It’s true, we’re talking with PSG about Krychowiak,” Castro told a promotional season ticket news conference.
“It won’t be necessary that PSG pay the clause, but if Krychowiak leaves our club, we will receive a big income.
“This income can help to avoid selling other players. We have a big offer, but it isn’t the clause.”
New coach, Jorge Sampaoli, has targeted Atletico Madrid’s Matias Kranevitter, 23, and Las Palmas’ Roque Mesa, 27, this summer and the club are in talks with Hatem Ben Arfa, 29, over a possible free transfer to the Andalucian capital.
