And if he’s not available, Kylian Mbappe will have to do.
The Paris St-Germain forward is known to be keen on a switch to the Bernabeu but whereas last summer he was keen to force a move from Barcelona, this time the Brazilian will only leave if the club instigates the transfer.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is in regular contact with the 26-year-old’s father who is also his agent. The man who instigated the Galactico era is keen to bolster the club’s fading reputation in the transfer market with another wave of big-spending.
Which means bringing in one of PSG’s two prized assets. Financial Fair Play problems dog the signing of Mbappe with UEFA yet to decide whether the loan deal for the 19-year-old last summer contravened regulations.
If it does, PSG are expected to have to sell one of their big-name stars to comply with restrictive targets to be placed on them.
Mbappe proved a pivotal member of the France World Cup winning squad and began the season with a brace of goals against Guingamp last weekend. Neymar grabbed the other, leaving Perez drooling at the prospect of either moving to the Bernabeu.
As unlikely as either seems, last summer proved nothing is impossible.
