Arsenal were given a boost when Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel admitted that midfield sensation Max Meyer is determined to leave the club this summer, reports Bild.
The club’s new head of recruitment Sven Mislintat is keen to raid the Bundesliga for his key signings after the World Cup, ready to tap into the country’s rich vein of young talent as Arsenal look to return to the Premier League top four.
However, Italian newspaper Il Messaggero claims Roma already held talks with the 22-year-old’s agent about a move to the Giallorossi.
Arsenal though face a big summer with Jack Wilshere, 26, set to leave on a free transfer after rejecting the club’s “final and best offer” of a new deal. Everton are in prime position to land the England international if he leaves the Emirates.
His Spanish team-mate Santi Cazorla is also set to be given a free transfer after suffering career-threatening injuries in 2016 and is well on his way to regaining his fitness. The Gunners will release the fan favourite to allow him to resurrect his career.
If the Gunners land the Germany international, he will be the second Schalke player to move to north London on a free transfer in consecutive summers. Mesut Ozil is also another Schalke alumni in the Arsenal squad.
Liverpool and Tottenham were both previously interested in Meyer but appear to have moved onto different targets.
