Spurs Target Smalling!

Tottenham Hotspur‘s quest to improve their squad ahead of the 2017/18 season, sees them looking to Manchester United‘s Chris Smalling to shore up the centre of their defence, according to the Mail on Sunday.

Rumours surfaced that Kevin Wimmer is set to leave White Hart Lane having failed to impress manager, Mauricio Pochettino. With Kyle Walker also set to depart, Spurs back line is looking thin on numbers.

Despite being an integral part of the back four last season, Smalling’s future at Old Trafford is mired in doubt. United spent over £30m on Benfica’s Victor Lindelof and it’s widely expected the Swedish international will partner Eric Bailly as Jose Mourinho looks to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

With an England career to think about, Smalling will be concerned about losing his place in the Red Devils starting line-up. With promising youngsters such as Arsenal’s Rob Holding, knocking on the door of the full England squad, the Greenwich-born defender knows he can’t take his place in Gareth Southgate’s plans for granted.

A number of Premier League clubs, including West Ham United, Newcastle United and Arsenal, have already expressed an interest in Smalling, who has 31 England caps to his name. Whether Jose Mourinho is willing to sanction a deal which strengthens a rival remains to be seen.
