Despite learning Spanish for more than a year, Everton’s highly-rated central defender John Stones, 22, has turned down a move to Barcelona. The England international was offered a deal believed to be worth £90,000 per week plus bonuses from the Spanish giants. However, sources close to the La Liga club have indicated that the accomplished youngster prefers a move to Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola is a keen admirer of the England international’s intelligent play and versatility, with their pursuit of Athletic Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte, 22, no barrier to signing Stones. The new City coach is aiming to rebuild his defence around the young pair, quashing criticism that he isn’t planning a long-term stay at The Etihad.
The Catalans were not surprised to learn that the wages they offered were lower than those from English clubs. Despite adding bonuses for the inevitable trophy haul, Stones agent left them in no doubt that a deal wasn’t going to happen on those terms.
It’s left the way clear for Guardiola with Chelsea’s interest not materialising. New Everton boss, Ronald Koeman, has given up hope of persuading Stones to stay for at least one more season.
Under his guidance, Southampton surged into the Europa League places and the Dutchman is hoping to persuade his prize asset that he can achieve the same at Goodison Park. Koeman had wanted the young defender to take the opportunity to spend another season on Merseyside and gain further experience as a first team regular, rather than from the bench, however this now seems unlikely.
