All signs point towards Timo Werner leaving RB Leipzig once the current season ends. And while Liverpool have emerged as a potential alternative, other sides could also get into the mix to land the coveted German striker.
Everything started when Oliver Mintzlaff, who is the Global Head of Soccer at Red Bull GmbH (who own RB Leipzig), commented in an interview with Kicker that the club won’t let Werner’s deal run into its final year.. which is 2020. The signs, then, are clear. Leipzig are either going to convince him to extend his deal, or they will sold him.
This could alert a number of clubs who may believe that a deal can be done this January if the right offer is put on the table. “A club like ours cannot afford to have Timo Werner go into a final contract year,” Mintzlaff said.
Leipzig have been playing very well and have settled as one of the top Bundesliga sides in recent years since their promotion. But Werner is ticketed for bigger things, and he seems set to move into a more competitive team or environment. With that in mind, all signs indicate a departure is the most likely case.
This could convince several teams to make a move for him, although Liverpool seem to be the front-runners to acquire him. Jurgen Klopp is a keen admirer of the German striker, and he would be open to bring him to Anfield. Especially since the departure of Dominic Solanke has opened a spot upfront in the first-team squad.
PSG, Chelsea and Real Madrid are some of the other teams that have been linked with a move for the German. But the only thing that seems clear now is that Werner won’t be calling Leipzig “home” for much longer.
