Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger scouts Riyad Mahrez

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger took a final check on Riyad Mahrez, 25, yesterday as he watched the Algerian face Paris St. Germain.

The Gunners have been heavily linked with a £37m move for the Footballer of the Year and despite a new contract offer from Leicester City worth £100,000 per week, is set to move to north London this summer.

Leicester received a harsh lesson on life with European giants in their 0 – 4 defeat in Los Angeles as Wenger ran the rule over the winger. Since returning to training, his form has shown no sign of dipping from last season when he received the highest personal accolade.

It’s the second time Arsenal have tried to raid the Foxes since the Premier League trophy found its way to the King Power stadium. Jamie Vardy, 29, was all set to move to the Emirates but in a late change of heart, signed a four-year deal worth £100,000 per week to stay in the East Midlands.

Claudio Ranieri hoped this was a strong sign to his squad but lost N’Golo Kante, 25, to Chelsea in a £32m deal recently. Persuading his mercurial winger that there is a strong future at Leicester became that much harder.

The Gunners face Chivas de Guadalajara tonight in Los Angeles before returning home. They are expected to contact Leicester this week to move the deal forward before the season proper begins.
