Thomas Vermaelen, 30, is a surprise transfer target for Liverpool after the Belgian international defender was told he is surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp.
Barcelona are looking to move on Vermaelen after two frustrating seasons in La Liga. The defender has only made 11 appearances in 2 seasons due to injuries. The same problems that plagued Vermaelen at Arsenal have followed him to Spain, and his future is now in doubt.
Representatives for Vermaelen have been shopping the player around Europe for weeks, with Liverpool and Roma leading the race for the Belgians signature. However it is only the English club who have made a formal offer.
It is believed Vermaelen would prefer a move back to England and would relish a chance to work with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and his new look squad next season.
