West Ham United striker Diafra Sakho is once again on the verge of a move to Rennes and this time, the club is right behind him.
The 28-year-old is courted by Crystal Palace as well but the French club are in pole position to sign the Senegal international.
After the summer shenanigans where Sakho did all the hard work bar persuading the Hammers to sell him, his agent has worked miracles in getting the Ligue Un side to renew their interest.
Sitting eighth in the table, Rennes are already out of the European places with a sixteen-point gap to fifth-placed Monaco while only seven points clear of the relegation battle. Les Rouges et Noirs hope Sakho will rediscover his Metz form, where he scored 40 goals in 75 games during his final two seasons at the club.
West Ham were seduced by the player’s returns but he has failed to meet expectations and this season finds himself on the periphery of the first team. It’s believed his contract is heavily weighted toward appearances fees than his basic wage, a source of unrest with the player.
And when his time is over, few will mourn his departure from the London Stadium. His place in Premier League history, like that of the equally luckless but no less bizarre, Peter Odemwingie, is assured.
