Liverpool are ready to turn to Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij after admitting defeat in the chase for Virgil Van Dijk, 26, claims a Daily Mirror report.

The Southampton defender is heading to Manchester City after the Saints finally accepted the Netherlands international is not interested in staying on the south coast.

Liverpool, for so long favourites to sign him, are no longer in the running for his signature and have identified 25-year-old de Vrij as the alternative, capped 31 times by the Netherlands.

Lazio previously resisted all attempts to prise the centre-back away from Rome. However, the club is now prepared to listen to offers. Liverpool, it’s claimed, made a bid for de Vrij, but are facing stiff competition from Atletico Madrid, who also made a genuine enquiry for the player.

The Italian media also claims that Juventus are monitoring the situation.

Despite a free-scoring attack, Liverpool’s soft centre at the back is a cause for genuine concern at Anfield. Arsenal exposed the failings which prevent the Reds from challenging for the Premier League title with Jurgen Klopp also looking for a goalkeeper.

De Vrij is in his fourth season at the Stadio Olimpico but is unwilling to sign a new deal with the club.
