The Belgium international is at a stand-off with the club over renewing his current deal which expires in 2020. It’s expected that Tottenham will sell him this summer if he doesn’t sign a new deal, to maximise their transfer return on the 28-year-old.
A release clause of just £25m exists in his contract and that becomes active after this summer’s transfer window. With Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy deservedly acquiring a reputation as a tough transfer negotiator, the Lilywhites are unlikely to miss out on a fee which might reach double that value in the current market.
Alderweireld is demanding a huge increase in wages which Tottenham’s pay structure doesn’t permit. The north London club will face similar problems in the future as more of their stars demand parity with their peers on wages. That hasn’t stopped the club cashing in during previous windows if they cannot agree a new deal with players in a timely manner.
The Belgians agents, it’s reported, are looking at the wages Liverpool pay Virgil Van Dijk and believe their client is worth closer to the £180,000 per week the Dutch defender earns. Alderweireld is understood to be earning 1/3 of that amount currently.
