Newcastle United triggered the £3m release clause of Deportivo La Coruna defender Fabian Schar with the aim of completing the deal before the club leaves for its’ pre-season tour of Portugal, writes the Northern Echo.
Schar is set to undergo his medical in Newcastle today before completing the move tomorrow, following agreement of personal terms with his representatives.
The 26-year-old featured for his native Switzerland during the World Cup this summer, previously spent two seasons with Hoffenheim after leaving FC Basel in 2015.
After just one season with Deportivo, his release clause was activated following the club’s relegation from La Liga last season.
Signing the Swiss international cures Rafa Benitez’s headache in the centre of his defence. Newcastle weren’t an easy side to break down last season, but they were short of experience at the back.
With 271 appearances for clubs and country, Schar brings that know-how in abundance. The Magpies fought successfully against relegation from the Premier League and Schar’s time since leaving Basel has been spent in similar battles.
Benitez sold Chancel Mbemba to FC Porto earlier this summer but lost Florian Lejeune to a serious knee injury. The Frenchman is not expected to feature for Newcastle until the autumn.
