Van Dijk Still In Liverpool Sights

Inexplicably, Liverpool are still hot on the trail of Southampton centre back, Virgil Van Dijk.

Earlier in the summer, the Reds were reported to the Premier League for ‘tapping up’ the Dutch international and face a transfer ban in the January window if found guilty.

Rather than look elsewhere, the Mail on Sunday claims the Merseysiders are still keen on signing the former Celtic defender. It seems they are willing to test the patience of the Saints.

Southampton are resigned to losing Van Dijk, who has been coveted by the top six in England at some point in the past few seasons. Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea; you name it, they have all been linked. Manchester City seemed to have stolen a march last year but signed John Stones instead. Neighbours United landed Victor Lindelof this summer and are no long looking for a centre back.

Chelsea pose the biggest threat to Liverpool. The Blues are desperate to replace John Terry and the Bournemouth-bound, Nathen Ake. While Antonio Conte’s preferred targets are Juventus’ Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini, he is open to signed the Saints defender who was a pivotal player in their defence last season.

Jurgen Klopp knows his Liverpool squad was found hopelessly wanting last season and is desperate to strengthen the defence. Whether Southampton want to do business with the Reds is another matter.
