No-one can criticise Brighton’s ambition to survive this Premier League season. For the third time this summer, the Seagulls broke their transfer record. This time, Colombian international Jose Izquierdo arrived in a £13.5m move from the Belgians Club Brugge, reports the Daily Mail.
The winger, capped twice by his country in June, scored 14 goals in 28 Jupiler Pro League matches last season, bringing his total to 34 in 84 appearances. Goals have been at a premium for Brighton this season, suffering 0 – 2 defeats against Manchester City and Leicester City.
Izquierdo will make his debut for the club in the Carabao Cup tie against Barnet tomorrow night provided he receives his work permit from the British government in time. His Premier League bow is expected to come at Watford this weekend.
Seagulls boss Chris Hughton told the club’s website that Izquierdo had been with the club for “some time” whilst the deal was completed. He comes with the highest pedigree, having won the Golden Shoe in 2015/16. Crowned Belgium’s Player of the Year in Brugge’s title-winning season.
Having forced his way into the national team, Izquierdo will hope that the goal he scored in the 4 – 0 rout of Cameroon will stand him in good stead. Helping Brighton stay in the world’s highest-profile league won’t do him any harm either.
