David Beckham announced he wants Lionel Messi to be the poster boy of his Inter Miami when they join Major League Soccer in 2020, a Daily Mail report claims.
If the England legend is successful in luring the Argentinean superstar away from Barcelona, it would be as seismic a transfer as Pele signing for the New York Cosmos in 1975.
For several years, rumours circulated that Cristiano Ronaldo, 33, was the new franchise’s main target. Speculation intensified this summer when the row between the Portuguese and Real Madrid Florentino Perez became public knowledge. However, when signing for Juventus, Ronaldo made it clear he still believes he has several years at the top of world football remaining.
Beckham faces a similar problem convincing Messi to move to the USA. His Barcelona contract expires in 2021 around the time of his 34th birthday. The Argentina maestro may feel it is too soon to make the transition to an ‘easier’ life.
Messi also indicated previously that he intends to finish his playing career in Barcelona and it would be a brave move to sell him. His impact on the pitch is such that the Blaugrana need time to bring in replacements, as well as assessing the impact on players already at the club.
The seats around the Camp Nou declare Barcelona is “More than a Club”; they may find that Messi is as well.
