Rumour: Joe Allen shock transfer to Manchester United

Manchester United have made a surprise entry into the race for Liverpool’s Joe Allen, 26.

The Welsh international was prominent in his country’s run to this summer’s Euro 2016 semi-finals and has already attracted the interest of Swansea City.

With twelve months of his contract at Anfield remaining, Liverpool are set to cash in on Allen this summer. A fee of around £12m was mentioned before he left for France but that has now risen to £16m on the back of his performances for Wales.

The player is thought to be keen on returning to Swansea but Mourinho is considering his options with his moves for Blaise Matuidi, 29, and Paul Pogba, 23, waiting on the players return from their respective holidays.

Pogba has been urged to stay in Turin by his current club manager, Max Allegri, with the Italian confident that Juventus have a better chance than Manchester United of winning the Champions League.

United, in next season’s Europa League, are confident that Pogba will drive them forward to a title challenge and a top four finish at the very least.

Mourinho is looking to bring in a midfield partner for Pogba with Bastian Schweinsteiger, 31, disappointing in his first season at Old Trafford. Paris St Germain are interested in the German and Allen is seen as the perfect minder for Pogba as the Frenchman readjusts to Premier League life.
