Manchester United and Manchester City are about to unleash a new transfer war for one of the most coveted midfielders in Europe this season.

According to a report from The Sun, The Citizens and The Red Devils are set to go toe-to-toe in order to acquire Anderlecht star Leander Dendoncker. The Belgian defensive midfielder impressed against Manchester United during the UEFA Europa League last season and have been tracking him ever since, but City are expected to make a push to sign him as well.

In fact, the 22-year-old defensive midfielder scored against United in the Europa League last season. He has been valued at £30 million after helping Anderlecht lift the Belgian title, and has also featured – although on a limited role – with the Belgian national team of late, so there is a chance he can play in the World Cup next year.

If that’s the case, then Dendoncker’s value would rise up even more. And considering both Manchester clubs have been monitoring him closely, it doesn’t seem far-fetched that both clubs will try to sign during January in order to avoid a spike in his transfer fee.

Chelsea and Everton have also enquired about Dendoncker’s availability, but City and United are both ahead on the race to sign him.
