According to football.london, Chelsea are already in talks with OGC Nice to bring Ivory Coast midfielder Jean Michael Seri to the Stamford Bridge in a move which could spell the end of Danny Drinkwater’s Blues career.
It’s being reported that Chelsea triggered the £35m release clause in 26-year-old Seri’s contract and are now in discussions with Nice over the structure of the deal.
Midfield has been a problem area for Antonio Conte since selling Nemanja Matic, 29, to Manchester United. Despite a squad packed with international players, the Italian has failed to find a combination which gave the club a chance to retain the title won so imperiously in 2016-17.
With Nice struggling to emulate their form of the previous campaign, a major overhaul of key positions is set to take place at the Allianz Riviera this summer. Mario Balotelli, 27, has already declared his intention to leave the club when his contract expires, and Seri is set to follow him out of the door.
It means the already crowded Chelsea midfield has no place for Drinkwater, a £35m last-ditch signing on last summer’s transfer deadline day. West Ham United are known to be interested in the former Leicester City midfielder who was a member of their 2016 title-winning side.
