Barcelona have been linked with a potential move for Saul Niguez for quite a while, and for good reason. Los Blaugranas tried to sign the Atletico Madrid star during the summer of 2017, but failed on his pursuit since Los Colchoneros were not ready to let him go.
Things have not changed of late, as Saul has emerged as not only one of the best players for Atletico, but also seems to be an important part of the Spanish national team under the tutelage of Luis Enrique. And Barcelona seem ready to make another run at trying to sign Saul once again.
According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, Los Blaugranas remain interested in the Spain international since they want to bolster an already impressive midfield depth. Barca currently has Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic, Arturo Vidal, Philippe Coutinho and Arthur among the alternatives to play at CM, but Saul would be an impressive addition to the mix.
The report also claims that the Blaugrana have an agreement with Atleti in place, dating back to the sale of David Villa in 2013, which allows them to have the first pick on two of Madrid club’s youngsters at the time – Javier Manquillo and Saul Niguez. This means that, should Atletico ever receive an offer for Saul they would be willing to accept from any other club, they would be obligated to contact Barcelona and offer the versatile midfielder under the same conditions to them first.
In other words: Barca have the first option in case Saul ever decides to leave the Wanda Metropolitano side. That’s quite a boost on his pursuit, although it seems Saul has absolutely no plans to part ways with their star playmaker.
