Jose Mourinho is set to make a sensational raid on former club Chelsea, with Cesc Fabregas, 29, the target.
The Portuguese manager could barely contain his glee when he signed the Spanish international from Barcelona two years ago and was a pivotal member of the Premier League title-winning side. Last season, with the club in turmoil, Fabregas was anonymous and criticised by the home crowd as Chelsea slumped to a mid-table finish.
Mourinho is waiting on Paul Pogba, 23, to make his decision on where his future lies. The French international is reportedly meeting with his agent Mino Raiola today to discuss the options available to him.
Whilst United are favourites to win his signature, however it is by no means certain that Pogba will leave Juventus, with the Italian champions offering the midfielder a new contract. Real Madrid have yet to publicly drop out of the race but privately admit they will be surprised if Pogba joins.
Fabregas would prefer to stay in London for family reasons. Despite intense speculation, he rejected a move to United three years ago after a summer’s flirtation with the then-champions.
Mourinho is waiting for new Chelsea boss Antonio Conte to run the rule over the Blues squad he has inherited before deciding whether to bid for Fabregas. Much will depend on Chelsea’s own transfer endeavours which have drawn a blank so far in the search for strengthening the midfield.
