Napoli have been scouting the market looking for alternatives to replace Faouzi Ghoulam. The 26-year-old suffered a gruesome knee injury, and will be sidelined for several months so the Serie A giants have been forced to look at alternatives during the January transfer window.
There aren’t many left-backs available on the market, and most options could be considered as a downgrade in comparison to Ghoulam who is one of the best defenders in the Serie A. However, Napoli are reportedly interested in making a push for Sime Vrsaljko, who currently plays for Atletico Madrid.
Vrsaljko is enjoying a great season with Los Colchoneros, but he has not been able to secure an automatic starting spot considering he competes with Juanfran who is one of the biggest idols in the club. The Croatian international already knows what it’s like to play in the Serie A since he played for Sassuolo after joining Atletico, and was considered one of the best full-backs in the league before moving to Spain.
Vrsaljko’s regular position is at right-back, though, but he is good enough to adjust to the opposite flank since the right side of the defence is taken by Elseid Hysaj. If he can adjust to move to the right side on a permanent basis, there is no doubt he would be a great signing for a Napoli team looking to battle on both the domestic and European level.
