Premier League giants Chelsea are currently under a transfer ban, meaning they can’t sign new players until further notice. However, The Blues do not want that to extend and are currently appealing to get that prohibition lifted.
If that’s the case, then The Blues have already identified their top target ahead of the January transfer window. And it will be none other than £35m-rated Nice defender Youcef Atal. This comes as a report from the Daily Mail.
Atal, who can play as a right-back or right midfielder – although he performs better on a defensive role – could be a long-term option for the position. Chelsea only have Cesar Azpilicueta for the RB role, and the Spaniard could use some competition. This is a similar case to the signing of Junior Firpo for Barcelona earlier this summer.
Atal has played 13 times for Algeria in his career, but he has also played a prominent role starring on Patrick Vieira’s Nice side since last season. He is widely seen as one of the top right-backs in Ligue 1, and seems to be ready to take the next step in his career.
Of course, all of this will depend on what happens with the club’s transfer ban. If it gets overturned, then expect the Stamford Bridge side to go after Atal as a priority signing in January.
