Leicester make £20m bid for Watford striker Troy Deeney

Leicester City’s £20m bid for Watford’s Troy Deeney, 27, has been rejected by the Hornets, leaving the Premier League champions sweating over 29 year-old Jamie Vardy’s decision on whether to join Arsenal or not.

Reports from the England camp suggest the Foxes can expect good news from Vardy’s decision but their pursuit of the Watford captain indicates they are taking nothing for granted.

When details of Arsenal’s move for the England striker leaked, his signature on a £120,000 per week contract was considered a formality. However, Vardy asked for more time to consider the move and allowed doubts to creep in over whether he would join the north London club.

Deeney is seen as an ideal replacement. Strong and with plenty of pace, he has Premier League experience as well as the hunger a career outside of the top flight forges. A key member of Watford’s survival last season, he scored thirteen goals from thirty-six starts as the newcomers headed toward their thirteenth place finish.

Despite the rumours, Vardy is still expected to join Arsenal. The Gunners have experience in this situation, having agreed terms with Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez before the last European Championships and World Cup respectively. Those deals were announced days after their countries exited the tournaments with Vardy likely to become an Arsenal player at the end of this month.
