United Given Perisic Boost As £54m Release Clause Is Revealed

Manchester United‘s pursuit of Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic last summer is set to be revived with the Daily Mail reporting the existence of a £54m release clause in his contract.

If the claims are correct, Jose Mourinho may land a player whom he greatly admires. The Croatian international elected to remain in Italy last summer and signed a new contract with the Nerazzurri.

Concerns over his age are unfounded. Perisic, 28, is considerably younger than Ibrahimovic and with the United forward line lacking football maturity, would be an ideal addition to the Old Trafford squad.

An escape clause valued so low is symptomatic of the problems facing clubs at the moment. Transfer fees were inflated by the fee paid by Paris St Germain for Neymar Jr, 26, as well as the £165m owed to Monaco for Kylian Mbappe, 18.

With English clubs quoted higher fees as a matter of course, the €60m clause for Perisic will come as a relief for Manchester United. Adding the Croat and Mesut Özil, 28, on a Bosman, would be fantastic business in anyone’s book.

It would also have the Stretford End salivating at the prospect of the club landing its first Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.
