England left for Euro 2016 yesterday with Arsenal still waiting to finalise the £20m signing of Jamie Vardy, 29, from Premier League champions, Leicester City. The striker has reportedly told Arsenal of his intention to sign for them but the Gunners are concerned that he may change his mind and stay at the King Power.
Roy Hodgson stated that he wants he players focused on the job in hand and has told Vardy to forget about his club decision until the tournament is over.
That might be easier said than done. The England manager has banned players from leaving the Chantilly base to finalise transfers which leaves Vardy’s situation hanging in the air. Could it affect his form as it has other players in the past, most notably Steven Gerrard in 2004?
Arsenal meanwhile although confident that they have made their second significant signing of the summer have been left with the nagging doubt that he will change his mind whilst away. They don’t have a strong presence in the England camp with just Jack Wilshere, 24, in France to persuade Vardy that the move is one he has to make.
The possibility that he may accept a revised contract offer from Leicester is a nightmare scenario for the north London club. They already fear that the talks currently being held with Riyad Mahrez are being used as a tool by his representatives to engineer a better contract with the Premier League champions.
