Liverpool entered the chase for Manchester City midfielder David Silva but face strong competition from Italy, reports ESPN.

The 31-year-old Spaniard was linked with a move to AC Milan last summer but preferred instead to remain in the north-west. He and the club have been in discussions for several months over an extension to his current deal which expires in 2019.

Silva recently declared his preference for remaining at the Etihad. “I hope I can sign soon because I would love to be here and play for City 10 years,” seeming to kill off any hopes Liverpool may harbour of signing the 116-times capped Spain international.

However, Inter Milan are looking to cement their place as title challengers and identified the mercurial Silva as a key transfer target. Talk of a Fenerbahce bid has been dismissed with the interest of clubs from two of Europe’s major leagues.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp believes Silva is the perfect replacement for the seemingly perma-injured Adam Lallana, 28. The England international has yet to feature for the Reds in a competitive match this season after suffering injury in a pre-season friendly against Atletico Madrid.

Despite Klopp claiming that Lallana will be back in action later this month, his injury record is such that doubts remain over whether he will feature regularly in the future.

Silva is the club’s main target to ease the pressure on Klopp’s misfiring squad.
