Tottenham’s relentless pursuit of AZ Alkmaar striker Vincent Janssen, 21, is likely to pay off this week with the Dutch international expected to join in a £16m deal.
Top scorer in the Eredivisie last season, Janssen has rejected other offers, notably from Paris St. Germain, in favour of a move to White Hart Lane this summer. Premier League rivals Everton and Manchester United dropped out of the race when they had bids of £15m knocked back by AZ.
Janssen vented his frustrations at Alkmaar’s negotiating stance and urged the club to come to an agreement with Tottenham quickly. With Harry Kane struggling badly for England at Euro 2016, adding to his strikeforce became a high priority for manager, Mauricio Pochettino.
Tottenham’s title challenge collapsed last season amid rancour in the London derby at Stamford Bridge as the reliance on Kane for goals became a millstone around the striker’s neck. Janssen offers the prospect of a lethal partnership or an alternative on the occasions the Argentinian opts to play with a sole centre forward.
The north London club also face losing Heung Min-Son for two months at the start of the season as he jets off to Rio de Janeiro with the South Korean Olympic team.
