Chelsea have raised the stakes in their pursuit of Romelu Lukaku, 23.
With Everton holding out for £75m, the Blues are ready to offer £65m plus French striker Loic Remy, 29, in part-exchange for the Belgian international.
Lukaku has made it clear that he wants to leave Goodison Park this summer but the Toffees are determined that it will be on their terms.
The option of a player exchange was not previously considered but with the Premier League season beginning in ten days, the option may appeal to Everton boss Ronald Koeman. Whilst at Leicester City, new director of football Steve Walsh looked at signing Remy in January.
Remy moved to Chelsea in August 2014 in a £10.5m deal but has found his opportunities severely limited making 47 appearances in two years.
Although Everton have yet to receive an official bid from Chelsea for Lukaku, the two clubs have been in contact over the fee and formal negotiations are expected to begin quickly as Antonio Conte looks to add to his squad.
The Blues suffered a chastening 2 – 3 defeat to Real Madrid at the weekend with the scoreline only achieving respectability after last season’s Champions League winners made several changes.
