One of the biggest needs for Arsenal ahead of the January transfer window is to improve their defensive line. They could use another body at the centre-back position.
With that in mind, The Gunners are already looking at alternatives. And the latest names to be linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium is none other than Dayot Upamecano. The RB Leipzig star is considered to be one of the biggest defensive prospects in Europe, but he has taken a step forward in his development with his play this season.
However, there’s a positive aspect that could boost Arsenal’s pursuit of the French defender. Leipzig could be forced to part ways with him unless they want to lose him on a free and if they decide to put him on the market, they could very well ask for Upamecano’s release clause. Essentially, this means that any side that wants him would be forced to pay £53 million – unless Leipzig are able to come to terms on a new deal for him.
The 20-year-old has been on Arsenal’s shortlist for quite a while now, but it remains to be seen whether they will be able to sign him or not. Plus, Leipzig’s rise can’t be denied, either. They are establishing themselves as one of the biggest teams in the Bundesliga and if that’s the case, then they might not have to sell him at all.
Upamecano, who has won 13 caps with the France U21 side, has registered just three appearances this season for Leipzig.
