Arsenal’s number one priority for the upcoming transfer window is to sign a central defender. With the potential departure of players such as Shkodran Mustafi and Nacho Monreal, The Gunners must increase their defensive depth.
And according to a recent report from Marca, Arsenal have set their sights on Getafe defender Djene Dakonam, and are making him a top priority this summer. The 27-year-old Togo international has been one of the best players for an overachieving Getafe side this season, and he would certainly help addressing Arsenal’s defensive shortcomings ahead of the upcoming campaign.
The potential transfer fee wouldn’t be an issue, either. Arsenal will reportedly have a £40 million transfer budget next summer, but Dakonam – or Djené, as he’s known in Spain – has a release clause of “only” £30 million in his current contract, which is a figure that Arsenal will almost certainly be more than willing to meet.
Expect Arsenal to move quickly in the pursuit of the Togolese defender. Unai Emery tends to sign players rather quickly in the transfer window, and this July shouldn’t be any different. Especially knowing that Arsenal have a huge gap defensively that they need to solve as quickly as possible if they want to challenge for the title next season.
