As soon as FC Barcelona let Neymar sign for PSG, they identified Philippe Coutinho as his potential replacement. However, recent reports have indicated that Los Blaugranas are not going to pursue the Brazilian playmaker anymore.
According to several reports coming from Spain, and despite Liverpool knocking back three previous bids, Barca reportedly made a fourth offer for Coutinho late on Thursday, thought to be worth around €150 million including add-ons. However, The Reds once again closed the door on a potential deal and said their star playmaker is not for sale.
It is clear Barcelona do not want to overspend for Coutinho, and are reportedly moving to other targets in an effort to bolster the squad before the Transfer Window closes in the coming hours. It has been reported that Angel Di Maria remains an option, and that Mesut Özil has emerged as a potential target in case Coutinho’s deal collapses entirely. So don’t be shocked if Los Cules end up making a late move to capture the Arsenal star.
Liverpool stood pat during the entire summer and in the end, they were consistent with their initial statements saying that Coutinho was never for sale.
Coutinho is currently with the Brazil squad and he scored in Thursday’s 2-0 win over Ecuador, and now he will have to report back to Anfield. His deal to Camp Nou officially collapsed despite Barca’s attempts to find a different outcome.
