Some transfers always require the Premier League to extend the deadline and this year was no exception. It’s believed six deals required the EPL to go beyond the 11pm closure of the transfer window with Danny Drinkwater’s move to Chelsea finally being completed.

The Daily Star reports the 27-year-old arrived at Chelsea’s Cobham training facility around midnight to complete his medical and bring his dream move away from Leicester City.

The England international tried to force a move through yesterday when he handed in a transfer request. However, the Foxes remained adamant that Chelsea must meet their valuation for the midfielder, something the defending Premier League champions steadfastly refused to do.

As the clock ticked on Deadline Day, it seemed that both clubs intransigence would scupper the deal. In the end, Chelsea blinked first and with time fast running out, agreed the £30m fee Leicester were demanding.

While Drinkwater tried desperately to complete the deal, the Foxes turned their attention to his replacement, Adrien Silva, 28. A member of Portugal’s European Championship winning side, the Sporting Lisbon midfielder will cost around £15m. He played this evening in Porto for his country, complicating the transfer.

However, the Leicester Mercury reports all sides are working to finalise the moves and ensure the deals don’t collapse.
